I’m very excited to announce that our new game Tilt and Swipe is live on the Android store. Please download it and have a play if you have an Android device. Seriously, I hope you enjoy playing it as much as I have enjoyed making it!
Please remember to rate the game if you like it.

Hands up all those who think Brian Setzer is a genius?
OK Hands up all those who have even heard of him?
OK so to help jog your memory a bit here is a picture of him…
still nothing?
OK. What if I said he used to play in the “Stray Cats”? Some of you older guys probably now remember him but I bet most of you still have no idea who he is. Yet he continues to tour around the USA and Europe to sell out concerts, continues to get rave reviews for his records and regularly features in the music press. Yet popular fame has eluded him.
The thing is he doesn’t make music because he wants to be famous. He makes a particular type of music, which has very limited mainstream appeal but it’s music he feels passionate about. He does a kind of big band rock-a-billy thing. He’s a very good guitarist, even better performer quite a good singer and the people who like him love him. Do you think he cares that his songs don’t get played much on the radio? I doubt it very much. He makes more than enough money to keep doing what he loves and as long as there are people who like rock and roll, blues and rockabilly he’s got an audience. Compare that to the musicians who court fame and pander to what the consumer wants. They have a very slim chance of success and when they do make it the success is massive, but usually very short lived.
With regards to games if I could choose I’d be like Brian. I’d make the games I wanted to make, for an audience who like my games. I’d not get rich but I’d continue making games for a long time and I’d make a lot of people happy.

The latest Tilt and Swipe installer is available here for Android.
We’ve got all the key features in now. Really the only things left to do are to finish of the last set of 20 levels so we can sell them and sort out some performance issues on lower end devices. But that won’t effect the experience of anyone playing the first 20 levels or so. I have to say I’m very pleased with what we’ve achieved, my little boy played through it at the weekend and he loved it! He is a pretty discerning player who only plays games that he enjoys even if his Dad made them.
The game will be live on the Android store just as soon as we sort out in-app purchasing.
It’s great to have another game out

We’re getting closer with Tilt and Swipe. In fact we are about to submit a build to PAX Australia with the aim of getting into their indie developer showcase. Competition is fierce but we reckon we have a great game so we have a good chance. If we get featured in the showcase then we’ll be attending the show as exhibitors which is very exciting. If not then we’ll probably be going along as nerds anyway
Looks like it will be a great show either way…

Sorry I haven’t been blogging as much recently. I’ve been incredibly busy. I’m close to the end of the Canberra Youth Theater project . Image above is a promo for it. If you like games, theater and are interested in interactive stories then I strongly recommend you attend. It’s going to be really interesting. There is a small team of us at the AIE working on code and art and it’s one of those projects which is so experimental that it was difficult to predict how much time would be needed. But it’s almost done now.
Development on Tilt and Swipe continues. Still not ready to release but it is getting closer. I added one last feature at the weekend, an extra bonus multiplier for players who manage to get combos. It adds another dimension to the game for players who are trying to get a big score whilst keeping the game simple for those just interested in completing levels. My hope is that it provides more depth and replay-ability.
Other than that I also handed in my first assignment to the ANU as part of my Masters in Computing. I was quite pleased with it but I have been out of higher education for 20 years so I’m not over confident about the grade I’ll get. Fingers crossed though.
And finally this weekend we went up to Sydney, saw The Adams Familly Musical, and went to Taronga zoo. Both where excellent and recommended.
Stay tuned for more news on the projects I am working on. I’ll release something soon I promise

Good friends of mine over at the AIE incubator in Canberra have just launched their website, Cardboard Keep Games. They have already made some great games so pop over to their site and play them! I’m proud to say I taught some of these guys last year.

We bought our first robot a few weeks ago:

Well I guess it depends on your definition of robot. It’s not quite What Asimov had in mind when he came up with his three laws of robotics in the 50s
As an example of a free roaming machine it’s pretty pathetic really. Regularly getting stuck under chairs, in corners and failing to find it’s way back to it’s recharge station. As a vacuum cleaner it’s better but gets clogged up pretty quickly so needs regular cleaning and maintenance. However it picks up quite a bit of dirt and at least it means we don’t have anything like as much dog hair floating around the place.
The secret of getting the best from it is to move everything off the floor before letting it lose and block of the areas in the room where you know it’s going to have problems. This gives it the best chance to not get confused, tangled up and find it’s way home again. Set it running as you leave for work and let it do it’s business every day. Honestly it does a rather poor job each time it cleans but if it’s cleaning everyday then it adds up to a reasonable job over a week and at least we don’t have to do it anymore!
Now if only I could find a robot which could follow the kids around, picking up dropped toys, clothes and turning of lights!

I know I haven’t been in touch for a while! Life is a bit mad for me at the moment. The start of the new term at AIE is always busy. I’ve started a Master of Computing at the ANU which is taking a lot of my time at the moment, my first assignment is due in about two weeks.
I’m also involved in a interactive theater project with the Canberra Youth Theater which will be part of the Canberra centenary celebrations. This is a really exciting project which I think has a lot of potential. I am looking forward to seeing it working in a months time.
But all this work doesn’t mean I have forgotten about you! Work on my games, including Tilt and Swipe, continues and we really are into the final stages of that project.
After much play testing and refinement we decided to make one last change to the board layout to try and solve a few visibility issues. Seb made the changes today and here is a render of the game board.

It looks a bit dark and empty with any balls in it but that will change once it’s in the game. I’m trying to do that tonight and tomorrow so I can show it working to Seb on Monday.
The play testing has gone really well, with lots of really positive feedback, and there is no doubt that it’s a fun game with bags of potential. Hopefully the beta Android APK will be out before the end of the month. Fingers Crossed!
